Infusion Therapy Complications

 

WHEN SHOULD I CALL?

 

•If your temperature increases 1.5 degrees or more from your baseline temperature.
•If you notice swelling in your face, neck, chest, arm or the insertion site of your access.
•If you notice pain, swelling, hardness, redness, drainage, or bleeding at the insertion site of your access device.
• If blood is backing up in your line or extension set.
• If your dressing is wet and you have not been trained to care for it.
• If your line or extension set is leaking.
• If your line looks like it has slipped out.
• If you experience difficulty with the infusion, such as inability to flush or infuse, burning or pain during the infusion, “ear gurgling” during flushing/infusing or headache.
• If you are having chest pain, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, difficulty breathing and/or coughing, you should call 911.
